This represents a considerable and influential body of scholarly material on the history of the two counties. Some of the articles published in the nineteenth-century volumes now constitute primary sources for certain aspects of the history of Lancashire and Cheshire.

All volumes of the journal from volume 1 issued in for the Papers published in the TRANSACTIONS usually have been read previously to the Society, but the Council is always ready to consider for publication papers sent to the Honorary Editor by members or non-members who have worked on some aspect of the history of Lancashire or Cheshire.

OF THE HISTORIC SOCIETY OF LANCASHIRE AND CHESHIRE Liverpool, London and Prescot. EDITORIAL NOTE This volume devotes far more space to Lancashire than to Cheshire history.

Each year the Council seeks to do justice to each of its two counties, but the contrast between the present acute shortage of acceptable Cheshire papers and the abundance. The Society is a charity which exists for educational purposes to promote the study of any aspect of the history of the Palatine counties of Lancashire and Cheshire.

The aims of the Society are achieved principally through public lectures and the publication of an annual volume of Transactions.
